  • our experience

Great Lakes Rigging owner Jon Duer has established an excellent reputation for unsurpassed customer service. Jon has 15 years of sail making experience with UK and Doyle Sails. In addition, he is certified in hand splicing and has attended Harken University.

Jon has had a lifetime passion for sailing. He grew up sailing on his family's Ericson 35 and has raced on all types of boats from dinghies to offshore boats. Aside from local sailing, he has competed in Key West and Charleston Race Weeks and many of the NOOD and MAC regattas. Unlike many sail makers and riggers, Jon has extensive cruising experience in addition to his impressive racing resume. Jon understands what cruisers are looking for and is anxious to help our cruising customers get the most enjoyment possible from their boats.

Jon brings his passion and expertise to each project at Great Lakes Rigging, creating quality products, remarkable service and loyal customers.

    Testimonials

I've owned many boats in my life, 2 Hinckley's, 2 Swans, 2 Valiants and a multitude of others both power and sail. In the end, the quality of a boat is totally dependent upon the people who build and service it and not the brand or name on the hull. Of all of my boats the Tartan 4700 stands out because of the exceptional work and supreme diligence of Jon Duer. Everything he said he'd do he did promptly, completely and to the highest standard. I can offer no higher compliment. Jon is a very rare bird in the boat business

Several years ago I started the process of rebuilding my J-29 'Stoopid Monkey.' When I made my first call to Great Lakes Rigging I was very impressed with the depth of knowledge about sailing and the range of products that they had to offer. I was even more impressed once I received my first order from them. The quality of work was outstanding and project was delivered when promised. This has been the case on every subsequent order from standing/running rigging to sail purchases. Their very competitive pricing and their high level of service make them a "One Stop Shop" for me!

I have known Jonathan Duer for quite some time so when I became aware that he had started Great Lakes Rigging I was positively excited.

My first need was a new set of stainless steel life lines for my Swede 55 which is the pride and joy of my wife and I. It's appearance is just as important to us as its performance and yes, safety. I digress, being an engineer I had very specific plans of how I wanted the life lines built and I also wanted to introduce a new entrance gate location. I worked with Jon on all of the details and Jon produced all of the parts just as I had wanted. While I installed the new Gate stanchions that Jon provided Jon then installed the turnbuckles and wires in a very professional manner and the result is safe, functional and most importantly beautiful. While Jon is a physical giant he is actually mild mannered and a pleasure to work with. He is always available by phone and is very good at follow up and follow thru. I am pleased to have this opportunity to recommend Great Lakes Rigging to anyone in need of Rigging, Sails, Repairs and many other services that Jon offers.

It is hard to believe but I am now 66 years old and work that I used to be able to perform easily now can take quite a while. Recognizing that fact, I have asked Great Lakes Rigging to commission my boat in the spring and decommission my boat in the fall. Scheduling dates with Jon and my yacht club for lift in and lift out is easy as Jon is very flexible. Jon's knowledge of mast rigging has proven important in that my yacht club is not as familiar with stepping my mast due to my in boom furling mechanism which is also a part of my mast. I should also mention that Jon's incredible strength and knowledge makes rigging my mast a much easier process. Jon's employees are like Jon in that they are knowledgeable, courteous and polite, just a real pleasure to work with. When it is time to put my three piece canvas cover on the boat in the fall Jon can pick it up with one hand. Jon has learned just how I like the cover frames installed (yes I am a little fussy). I hope you realize that I think very highly of Jon and his Great Lakes Rigging and highly recommend Great Lakes Rigging to you for your boating needs.

Just wanted to drop you a note thanking you and Doyle Cleveland for the excellent job you did replacing all my halyards, reworking my roller furling, new jib and main sails, and new boom vang. Everything works great, and the sails are wonderful. It is always a pleasure working with you. You show up when you say you will, you deliver materials on time, and if there is an issue you always call. Great service! I will recommend you to my sailor friends that need rigging or sail work.

I am a long term customer of Jon Duer of Doyle Cleveland and Great Lakes Rigging. He is the superstar of sailing customer service. His sails and rigging services are excellent. He is honest, knowledgeable, prompt, reliable and fair.
